The shipyard in Boizenburg is where welder Karl and his friends and relatives work. Rumours about the traditional company's financial difficulties are circulating, but the young people are initially unfazed. However, the effects of the shipyard crisis are increasingly making themselves felt in their lives. The brother-in-law of Karl's girlfriend, Kitty, loses his job and eventually takes his own life. Shortly afterwards, Karl also receives his notice of termination. After a night of drinking with his shipyard colleagues to drown his frustrations, he cheats on Kitty with another woman. Their great love seems to be coming to an end.

The end of the Great Patriotic War. Soviet troops arrive in a city abandoned by the fascists. Two women from the operational group find shelter in a house that, apparently, had been recently occupied by a German officer. Among the abandoned belongings is a lady's pink hat. The next morning, after leaving the house, one of the women decides to return for the hat and dies: the beautiful pink hat was booby-trapped.

Snuffy, Barney and Louise are stranded in the big city with no money for a mule and a wagon until a pair of gangsters offer to buy them one if they will just deliver a note and a satchel to the nearby bank. Desperately in need of funds to return to Hootin' Holler, Snuffy gets a job helping out the men by standing guard outside of a building... not realizing that he's becoming an unwitting pawn to a pair of bank robbers. The chase is on. The only clue to the robbery is a photograph of Snuffy's hat

The hero of the movie is a popular composer and jazz performer. He is certainly a gifted man. However, his character is... to put it mildly, uncomfortable. But when his wife and daughters leave town for a few days, Shmuel will step out of his simple daily life and into a more complex world lit by the night. When he misplaces his black hat along the way, Shmuel’s two lives will interconnect in a way he never expected.
